Starting off at a 2-year college really helps you nail down what you really want to do instead of going to a 4-year college, paying all that money and end up changing your major fives times. Coming here helps you figure out what you want to do. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I started at FM. Taking a history class with Dr. Marotta, one of my favourite professors, that’s where my passion for politics and American history came about. Professors here help you make a pathway for a career.
When I came to FM, I met so many people from all over the world like Vietnam, Japan, China, etc. Two of my closest friends are from Pakistan and Sweden.
I never thought that by going to school 15 minutes away from my house I’d be exposed to so many different cultures and people. I was pleasantly surprised that while being at home and making the transition to my next degree, I was able to do something other than I’m used to.
In the last 25 years, four-year college tuition has more than tripled from about $55,000 to $200,000.
Three years ago, I came here to study. I struggled with English and classes, and I was afraid to ask for help. On the first day of my stagecraft class, we were asked to talk about ourselves and I decided to talk about my struggles. That changed my life. My professor told me to accept who I am, to love myself. He explained that I am not alone. I am so lucky to have selected FM. FM not only taught me math, English, and chemistry, but also taught me about life and helped me to become who I am today. Most importantly, FM gave me a family. Literally. I met my husband here!
For me, the best part about studying at FM was that I really connected with my inner passion. I recognized how much I love studying about marketing and how I developed an interest for the stock market. Plus, I’ve never been so motivated to achieve my dream and that is possible now due to the fact that I met the best professor I ever had, Mr. Laurence K. Zuckerman. He is my idol, my motivation and a person I look up to for guidance. This is what FM offers. It's not just good academics but a good relationship with your professor, which is important and people tend to neglect it.
James and Thu, two freshmen studying at FMCC, share their reasons why they chose to study here. Thu studies General Studies major with a focus in Communication Media and James is pursuing a Business Administration major.
We choose FMCC because the school is not in the big city like NYC so the environment is better and has fewer distractions. Professors are really nice and friendly, especially to international students.
When you live in the dorms, you will have opportunities to learn more about other cultures. We have buses to go to the bank, or market three times a week. It's free so it is really convenient for students.
My dorm room is big and comfortable and the roommates are really nice and always help clean up. Over the holidays, the school usually organises long trips to places like NYC, museums, Six Flags Amusement Park, etc. During International Education week, we did a lot of interesting activities such as hosting a tea party. I did learn how to make tea and tried tea from other countries. On the weekend, the school takes us to play bowling!
Teachers in Vietnam don't really understand their students' psychology like here, where the relationship between students and teachers is more like a friendship. I feel really comfortable. It is really fun in the dorms and I think it's the best option to do while studying here. You should choose to live in a room with three other students so you can make new friends. From the dormitory to the school it's about 5 minutes of walking. It is really convenient because you will never be late to classes!
